The "Oil Easy" Story & Picture

I DEVELOPED THE WRENCH..."JUST FOR ME!"

Much like you, I am the owner of an airplane equipped with a Teledyne
Continental engine.  I truly enjoy doing the routine maintenance as
allowed by the FAR's and I'm guessing that you do too!  Without a doubt,
our IO-520 or IO-550 engines are the most expensive and important part
of our airplanes.  The regular changing of the engine's oil is vital to it's life
and is the single most important task which you can legally perform
yourself.  I change the oil and filter on my airplane every 25 hours.  I like
to use the large Champion filter (48109) and my airplane utilizes the large
pressure pump (242CW).  I always use the Dow #4 compound as
recommended when installing the new oil filter but when removal time
comes, the filter is usually stuck.  The space between the pressure pump
and the tip of the filter is so small that a conventional wrench will not fit.
A crow's foot wrench is fine for installing a new filter but it doesn't have
enough bite to remove the old one.  With the help of a friend, I have
developed a simple but very effective wrench to make filter removal and
reinstallation easier than ever.  I call it the
Oil Easy Wrench.   It is made
from a solid piece of stainless steel and is laser cut on a computerized
million dollar machine.  Originally, my only intention was to construct this
wrench for myself, but after showing it to several area mechanics and
receiving their enthusiastic reactions, I decided to produce a few dozen and
offer them to fellow members of the American Bonanza Society.  I sent a
wrench to Norv Colvin and he liked it so much he gave it a mention in the
ABS Newsletter (Sept. '94).  Another mention from a happy wrench user
showed up un the Forum section of the July, 1994 newsletter.

HERE'S HOW IT WORKS
First of all, the six point socket at one end is perfect for removing the old

filter.  Next, the twelve point 1" socket at the other end is perfect for
torqueing on the new filter.  I have also cut in a 1/2" slot and a 3/8" slot
to allow the use of either size torque wrench.  The tool can be used with
either end or flipped over.  It is the perfect shape and size to get into that
impossible spot between the top of the filter and the pressure pump and
still provide enough leverage to remove the old filter by hand.  Any of you
currently using the small filter can convert to the large filter for more
efficient oil filtration without any increase in filter costs.  Also, being able
to get the filter off in one piece would allow you to open it up for inspection
without having any metal fragments left in it from driving a screwdriver
through it...the way I used to have to remove my stuck filters!   Changing
your oil is now easier than ever.  If you don't change your own oil, consider
the
Oil Easy Wrench as the perfect gift for your mechanic that takes such
good care of you and your airplane.  Your satisfaction is 100% guaranteed.
If for any reason, you are not happy with your wrench, simply return it
within 30 days for a full refund.   Remember, the
Oil Easy Wrench is
"Double Good" for twins!
